Important places and historical monuments of Assam (Part 1)





(1) Aajan Peer Dargah:-
Aajan Fakir, also known as Aajan Pir, was a 17th century Sufi saint who came to Assam from Baghdad. He was the first saint to compose 'Zikir's in Assamese language. The dargah or tomb of Aajan Pir is located at Soraguri Sapori of Sivasagar district. The dargah was built during the reign of King Gadadhar Singha.








(2) Ashwaklanto Temple:-
The Ashwaklanto Temple is situated on the bank of the river Brahmaputra in Guwahati. The temple was built by King Shiva Singha in 1720.






(3) Basishtha Ashram:-
This ashram is situated on the Sandhyachal hill in the Guwahati city. The ashram is named after great Vedic Rishi names Basishtha who is said to have lived here. There is a temple inside the ashram know as 'Basishtha' temple. This is a temple of lord Shiva constructed by Ahom king Rajeswar Singha in 1764. Three streams- Sandhya, Lalita and Kanta flow through this ashram.







(4) Bhairabkunda:-
Bhairabkunda is located at the tri-junction of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan. The place is also a meeting point of the rivers Jia Dhansiri, Bhairavi and Daifam. This meeting point look like a Kunda- worshipping place of lord Shiva and that is why the place got it name as Bhairabkunda.










(5) Doul Gobinda Mandir:-
The holy Doul Govinda Mandir (Temple) is perfectly placed at the foothills of Chandrabharati Hill at  Rajaduar, Guwahati. The temple has two idols- Lord Shyamarai and Lord Govinda. The temple is famous for its Holi celebrations.










(6) Jatinga:-
Jatinga is a small village of Haflong, district Dima Hasao. It is famous for the phenomenon of migrating birds committing mass suicide, the reason for which is still unknown.
