Some important Wildlife Sanctuaries of Assam (Part 1)










1) Pobitora Sanctuary:-
Situated in the Morigaon district of Assam, Pobitora Sanctuary was established as a sanctuary in the year 1987. It is mainly famous for its Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros. Locals believe that a King of Mayong gave the name Pobitora in the name if his lovely daughter who died in her teens.

2) Burachapori Sanctuary:-
Burachapori sanctuary is situated on the south bank of the river Brahmaputra in Sonitpur district. Various species of migratory birds are seen in this sanctuary. It is a ideal habitat for Bengal Florican.

3) Sonai-Rupai Sanctuary:-
Established in the year 1998, this wildlife sanctuary is situated in the Sonitpur district and is famous for its scenic beauty.

4) Laokhowa Sanctuary:-
Established in the year 1972, the sanctuary is situated in the Nagaon district and is a ideal habitat for one horned Rhino and Asiatic water Buffaloes.

5) Garampani Sanctuary:-
Garampani sanctuary is located in the Karbi Anglong district and is famous for its hot water springs.

6) Pabhoi Sanctuary:-
Pabhoi, located in Lakhimpur district, is created exclusively for the protection of the wild water buffalo.

7) Pani-dihing Sanctuary:-
Situated in Sivasagar district, Pani-dihing was established as a Bird sanctuary in the year 1999.
