2) Medieval Era:- In the middle of the 13th century, Sandhya, a king of Kamarupanagara, moved his capital to Kamatapur, and thus established the Kamata Kingdom and this marks the beginning of Medieval era of Assam History.

During this period the following Kingdoms ruled Assam:-

(i) Kamata Kingdom
(ii) Kachari Kingdom
(iii) Sutiya Kingdom
(iv) Ahom Kingdom
(v) Bhuyan Chieftains

(i) Kamata Kingdom:- This kingdom appeared in the western part of the older Kamarupa kingdom on the Indian subcontinent in the 13th century. The following dynasties ruled the kingdom
(A) Khen Dynasty
(B) Koch Dynasty

(A) Khen Dynasty:-
The Khen dynasty of Assam replaced the Pala dynasty and their accession marks the beginning of the Kamata kingdom.
Prithu, a Khen ruler, had his capital in Kamrupa kindom. But his successor Sandhya moved the capital to Kamatapur and thus beginning the Kamata Kindom.
The Khen rulers had a humble origin, implying that they were probably local non-Aryan chieftains that rose to power after the fall of the Palas.
Nilambar was the last ruler of Khen dynasty. He was a successful warrior and is regarded as the most powerful king of his lineage. He expanded the kingdom to include the present districts of Koch Bihar in West Bengal and northern Mymensingh in Bangladesh. He also conquered the Undivided Kamrup and Darrang districts of Assam and the eastern parts of Dinajpur.
Nilambar was interested in communication across the kingdom and invested in a road building program. One of the roads later formed part of the trunk route betweenKoch Bihar, Rangpur and Bogra.
Nilambar was defeated by the Sultan of BengalAlauddin Husain Shah, in 1498. Hussein Shah's son was made the viceroy. Hussein Shah removed the local chieftains and established military control over the region. He issued coins in his name "conqueror of Kamru, Kamata".
Hussein Shah finally lost military and political control to revolts by local chieftains and the region lapsed into local control and rise of the Koch dynasty.

(B) Koch Dynasty:-
The Koch dynasty of Assam and Bengal, named after the Koch tribe, merged as the dominant ruling house in the Kamata kingdom in 1515. The first ruler of the Koch dynasty was Vishwa Singha, who established himself in 1515 as the ruler of the Kamata kingdom.
Viswa Singha's two sons, Naranarayan and Shukladhwaj (Chilarai), the king and the commander-in-chief of the army respectively, took the kingdom to its zenith.

The history of Koch dynasty is really long. A special part dedicated to this dynasty will be updated tomorrow.

And the other kingdoms who ruled Assam during the Medieval era will be updated soon.
